Don’t Be Deceived by Satan
I recently read an interesting story in a column by Pastor Soo Kwan Lee of Seoul Houston Church, and I would like to briefly share it with you.
One day, a man who had been convicted of fraud fourteen times asked to meet with a therapist. At first, the therapist was reluctant, but he became curious about why people commit fraud and what kind of people are most likely to fall for scams. So he agreed to meet with him.
According to the man, the people who are most vulnerable to scams are those who struggle with fear or loneliness.
People who live with fear tend to imagine the worst possible outcome. They become anxious, are afraid of losing something, and can easily be overwhelmed by someone who sounds authoritative. So when they hear things like, “Your bank account may have been hacked,” “You may be arrested for unpaid taxes,” or “If you don’t invest today, you will miss this opportunity,” they tend to react quickly and impulsively.
Lonely people, on the other hand, often have a strong desire to be accepted and emotionally connected with someone. Because of this, they may interpret simple kindness as special affection and easily open their hearts when someone shows them attention.
As I read this story, I thought, “This is very similar to the way Satan deceives us.” Satan is a deceiver. First, he plants fear in our hearts. He makes us afraid of things we do not need to fear. He makes small problems look much bigger than they really are and fills our hearts with worry. In this way, he tries to rob us of the abundant life God has given us.
Second, Satan whispers, “You are all alone.” Even though we have family and a community of faith around us, he tries to convince us that no one truly understands us and that no one is really on our side. Even Elijah fell for this deception for a moment and thought, “I am the only one left.”
So how can we keep from being deceived by Satan?
We need protection, and that protection is found by abiding in Jesus. He guards our hearts from fear and loneliness. We also need discernment. As we abide in Jesus, we grow in wisdom to recognize what is true and what is false, because Jesus Himself is the source of wisdom.
My prayer for all of us this week is that we will not be deceived by Satan’s lies of fear and loneliness, but instead live courageously and abundantly in Jesus Christ.
