Love Is Not Rude
Love Is Not Rude
Years ago, I preached a sermon series on 1 Corinthians 13 and spoke at length about love. Today, I want to reflect briefly on just one phrase from 1 Corinthians 13:5: “Love is not rude.”
Relationships often begin to break down over seemingly small things. It may start with a simple thought: “I feel disrespected.” And that feeling often comes from careless words or inconsiderate actions.
The Greek word translated as “rude” means to behave improperly or to treat someone in a way that is inappropriate or disrespectful. So how can we practice love by showing respect to one another?
First, honor the commitments we make to one another. Whether in a small group, a ministry team, or a marriage, every relationship has certain expectations and commitments. Being on time, keeping our promises, and responding to messages may seem like small things, but they communicate something important: “I respect you, and you matter to me.”
Second, remember that what hurts you can also hurt others. When someone treats us disrespectfully, we naturally become upset. But before reacting, we should ask ourselves, “Have I ever treated someone this way?” Love begins by examining ourselves before criticizing others.
Third, be careful of quick judgments and quick anger. We sometimes react to what we see without knowing the whole story. Before judging someone, take time to listen. There may be circumstances we do not know or a side of the story we have not yet heard.
Fourth, do not allow hurt feelings to quietly build up inside. If someone has hurt or offended you, find an appropriate time to talk honestly about it. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. A sincere conversation can clear up misunderstandings and prevent deeper wounds.
Finally, we are often least careful with the people closest to us. Because we feel comfortable with them, we may speak more carelessly or take them for granted. But closeness should never become an excuse for disrespect. Love loses its beauty when it loses respect. May we learn to honor those closest to us even more, choosing our words carefully and treating one another with the respect that love deserves.
