우상은 반드시 제거되어야 합니다.

“오늘은 선교 중에 경험한 한 가지 에피소드를 나누고자 합니다.

이곳 힌두권에서는 수많은 신을 섬기기에 우상도 매우 다양합니다. 동물, 물질, 심지어 유리잔이나 신발까지 우상이 되기도 합니다. 특히 많은 가정에서 귀신의 형상을 그린 부적을 문에 붙여두곤 합니다.

어느 가정을 방문했을 때, 가족 모두가 순수하게 복음을 받아들이고 예수님을 영접했습니다. 기도 제목을 물어보니 다섯 살 아이는 밤마다 무서워 울고, 여자들은 악몽을 꾼다고 했습니다. 집안을 둘러보니 곳곳에 부적들이 붙어 있었습니다. 그래서 가장에게 “이제 참된 신이신 예수님을 영접했으니 부적을 떼어내십시오”라고 권면했습니다. 그러나 그는 부적을 제거하면 해가 있을까 두렵다며 망설였습니다.

선교지를 다니며 이런 모습을 자주 봅니다. 어떤 가정은 복음을 듣고 그 자리에서 우상을 제거하자 즉시 집안에 하나님의 평안이 임하고 악귀가 떠나는 경우도 있었습니다.

이 일을 보며 네팔뿐 아니라 미국에 사는 우리 자신도 돌아보게 됩니다.

예수님을 믿지만 여전히 놓지 못하는 modern 우상[돈, 성취, 자아, 오락]이 우리 삶을 둘러싸고 있습니다. 이 우상들은 결국 불안과 두려움, 외로움을 가져오지만, 우리는 바알과 하나님 사이에서 머뭇거릴 때가 많습니다.

참된 평안은 우상을 정리할 때 찾아옵니다. 기드온처럼 과감하게 우상을 제거하는 우리가 되기를 기도합니다.

Idols Must Be Removed

Today, I would like to share an episode I experienced during ministry.

In this Hindu region, where many gods are worshiped, idols are found everywhere. Animals, objects, even things like glass cups or shoes can become idols. Many homes also place talismans with demonic images on their doorframes.

One family I visited accepted the gospel with sincere hearts and received Jesus. When I asked for their prayer requests, a five-year-old child said he cries at night because he feels afraid, and the women shared that they often have bad dreams. Looking around their home, I noticed several talismans on the walls. So I encouraged the head of the household, saying, “Now that you have welcomed Jesus, the true God, you should remove these talismans.” But he hesitated, fearing that something bad might happen to his home if he took them down.

While traveling for ministry, I have seen this many times. Some families, after hearing the gospel, immediately destroyed their idols, and the presence of God filled their home as evil spirits left.

Seeing this, I was reminded not only of Nepal but also of our own lives in America. Even though we have received Jesus, we still cling to modern idols [ money, achievement, self, entertainment ]. These idols surround our lives and bring anxiety, fear, and loneliness. Yet we often remain caught between Baal and God, unable to let them go.

True peace comes when idols are removed. I pray that we will boldly tear down the idols in our lives, just as Gideon did.
