예배가 곧 선교입니다

저는 지난 한 주간 웨일스의 크라렐리라는 작은 도시에서 열린 열방부흥축제에 다녀왔습니다. 이 모임은, 게일이라는 여성 선교사님이 영국을 위해 기도하던 중 받은 비전에서 시작되었습니다. 하나님께서는 그분에게 “다시 부흥의 우물을 노래와 찬양으로 파라”는 말씀과 함께, 그 사역의 중심이 한국 사람들이 될 것이라는 구체적인 음성을 주셨습니다. 그 비전을 따라, 한국의 고형원 선교사님의 부흥팀과 여러 지역 교회들이 힘을 합하여 예배와 찬양을 중심으로 한 7일간의 컨퍼런스를 열게 된 것입니다.

우리는 ‘선교’라고 하면 흔히 전도나 구제를 먼저 떠올립니다. 그러나 선교의 궁극적인 목적은, 예수님의 이름을 알지 못하고 우상을 예배하던 사람들이 예수님을 주로 고백하며 예배하게 되는 데 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 예배는 선교와 같은 선상에서 이해되어야 합니다.

그렇다면 왜 예배가 곧 선교일까요?

첫째, 예배는 하늘의 문을 열어 그 지역의 영적 환경을 변화시킵니다.

아무리 전도를 시도해도, 전도의 문이 닫혀 있다면 사람들은 복음을 들으려 하지

않습니다. 그러나 예배는 사람들의 마음을 복음을 향하도록 토양을 바꾸어 줍니다.

둘째, 예배를 통해 하나님의 권능이 나타납니다.

사도행전을 보면, 사도들이 기도하며 예배할 때 땅이 진동하고 옥문이 열리는

놀라운 사건이 일어납니다. 예배는 악한 영을 깨뜨리는 영적 힘의 원천입니다.

셋째, 예배는 전도자들을 영적으로 무장시킵니다.

예수님께서도 각 마을을 다니시기 전, 새벽에 일어나 하나님과 깊이 교제하며

예배하셨습니다. 사역의 핵심은 ‘행위’보다 ‘관계’입니다. 그래서 저는 선교지에서

전도보다 먼저 예배를 세우는 것을 우선시합니다. 예배 없는 사역은 사역자를

메마르게 하고, 결국 스스로 무덤을 파는 것과 같습니다. 실제로 예배에 실패한

선교사들은 사역에서도 실패하는 경우가 많습니다.

이 원리는 우리의 일상에도 동일하게 적용됩니다. 우리의 삶 자체가 전쟁터이며,

우리가 살아가는 모든 현장은 선교지입니다. 가정이 선교지이고, 직장이

선교지입니다. 우리가 예배할 때, 그 자리마다 하나님의 권능이 임할 것을 믿습니다.

Worship Is Mission

This past week, I had the privilege of attending the Nations Revival Festival held in a small town called Llanelli in Wales. This gathering began from a vision received by a missionary named Gail while she was praying for the United Kingdom. God spoke to her clearly: “Dig the wells of revival again through songs and praise,” and revealed that the central people to lead this movement would be Koreans. In response to this calling, Rev. Hyungwon Ko and his revival team, together with various local churches, joined hands to host a seven-day conference centered on worship and praise.

When we think of “mission,” we often imagine evangelism or acts of service.

However, the ultimate purpose of mission is that those who once worshiped idols and did not call upon the name of Jesus will come to confess Him as Lord and worship Him. That is why worship must be understood on the same level as mission.

But why is worship mission?

First, worship opens the gates of heaven and transforms the spiritual atmosphere of a region. No matter how much we try to evangelize, if the door to the gospel is closed, people will not listen. But worship changes the soil of people’s hearts, making them receptive to the gospel.

Second, worship reveals the power of God.

In the Book of Acts, we see that when the apostles prayed and worshiped, the ground shook and prison doors were opened. Worship is the source of spiritual power that can break the hold of evil spirits.

Third, worship equips and arms God’s messengers.

Even Jesus, before visiting towns and villages, would rise early in the morning to spend time with the Father in worship. Relationship is more important than mere activity. For this reason, I always prioritize worship before evangelism on the mission field. Ministry without worship dries up the worker and becomes like digging one’s own grave. In fact, many missionaries who fail in worship ultimately fail in their ministry as well.

This truth applies equally to our daily lives. Life itself is a battlefield, and every place we set our feet is a mission field. Your home is a mission field. Your workplace is a mission field. When we worship, we believe that God’s power will be present in every place where we stand.
